Frequently asked questions about the fire at Kågeskolan
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about the fire at Kågeskolan and the consequences for the school's students.
On the night of Saturday, December 7, a fire broke out in one of the woodwork rooms at Kågeskolan. The fire was extinguished by the emergency services at 01:00 but smoke has spread in part of Kågeskolan.
The school was closed on Monday, December 9, but since Tuesday, December 10, teaching has resumed, with some adjustments. Years 7 and 8 will be taught remotely from Tuesday, December 10 until the Christmas holidays, while the other classes will be taught on site but in different classrooms than usual for some.
Native language classes are suspended until the Christmas holidays due to a lack of classrooms, but may resume before Christmas if the issue of space can be resolved.
By the start of spring semester, most of the students will be able to return to their original classrooms but year 4 and 5 will be temporarily taught at another school on Sjungande dalen.
The fire started in one of the woodworking classrooms in the basement of the middle school, i.e. the brick building. The parts of the school affected by the fire are the two woodwork rooms, the classrooms for years 4-6, the Smaragden and Kvarnbacken school-age educare (fritidshem) rooms, the cloakroom for Kvarnbacken, and some smaller group rooms and workrooms.
It is only in one of the two woodworking classrooms that there has actually been a fire, while the other affected part of school has smoke and soot damage.
The classrooms for year 6 and for Kvarnbacken and Smaragden school-age educare will be cleaned up by the start of the spring semester. However, there is still some work to be done with the ventilation, which the municipality is working on. Air quality will be ensured through regular airing out via windows.
The classrooms for year 4 and 5 will take longer to make usable again, and these classes will therefore be taught at another school on Sjungande dalen. We hope to be able to return to Kågeskolan as soon as possible, but are planning for teaching at Sjungande dalen for the entire spring semester.
The woodworking classrooms are the most damaged by the fire and will be unusable for the remainder of the school year.
Soft furnishings and fabrics such as curtains, drapes and similiar items in the fire and smoke damaged area will have to be discarded and replaced. Hard furniture such as tables and chairs will be decontaminated from smoke and soot.
Personal belongings, such as students' clothes and shoes that were left in the premises, are smoke damaged. It is up to each parent or guardian to decide whether to wash and keep them, or to claim them through their home insurance. The school's insurance does not cover personal belongings.
Clothes and shoes from the smoke-damaged part of the school can be collected from the school's courtyard on Thursday, December 12 between 15:30 and 17:00, after which they will be disposed of.
At this stage, we cannot say. We need to do a more thorough assessment of the building and what can be fixed, cleaned and ventilated and only then can we get an idea of how long it might take to fully restore the premises.
We are working to have at least some of the smoke-affected rooms back in use by the start of the spring term in January.
Solution for the spring semester
Year 6 and the Kvarnbacken and Smaragden school-age educare groups will be able to return to their regular classrooms by the start of the spring semester in January.
Classrooms for year 4 and 5 will take longer to make usable again, and their classes will be taught at another school on Sjungande dalen until the classrooms are repaired. We are hoping to be able to return to Kågeskolan as soon as possible, but are planning for teaching at Sjungande dalen for the remainder of the entire spring semester.

Until Christmas, year 4-6 will be taught in the classrooms normally used by year 7 and 8. The Kvarnbacken and Smaragden school-age educare will use different premises than their usual ones. Years 7 and 8 will be taught remotely or at a distance during this time, to free up classrooms for years 4-6.

Information about what applies to each class or group has been sent out to parents and guardians via Unikum.
The younger the students, the more difficult it is to teach remotely. Our assessment is that years 7 and 8 are better suited for remote teaching, so we will use their classrooms to teach years 4-6 on site during the time until the Christmas holidays.
We have also decided to keep teaching on site for year 9, as they are in their final year and we want to give them the best possible conditions to get their semester grades and later final grades.
Remote teaching for year 7 and 8 takes place via the Microsoft Teams platform. Specific instructions have been sent out via Unikum to the year 7 and 8 students and their parents and guardians.
Yes, students who are remotely taught can order lunch boxes and pick them up either at Kågeskolan, Ersmarksskolan or Kusmarksskolan.
A link to order lunch boxes has been sent to the parents and guardians of students in year 7 and 8.
No, it won't. It will be viewed as a so-called K-day (a staff day where no students are in school).
It is too early to say.
