EIB and CINEA support enables almost 750 new homes in Skellefteå

Skellefteå municipality has put forward a housing program with a total budget of €142 million, consisting of 7 housing projects offering around 750 sustainable and affordable homes to accommodate the municipality's increasing population.

Skellefteå municipality is at the forefront of the region's green transition. Thanks to the establishment of the Northvolt One battery factory, which requires a new skilled workforce, and the knock-on effects of its establishment, the municipality's population is expected to increase from 74,000 inhabitants to more than 90,000 inhabitants by 2030.

To meet the high demand for housing, the municipality is aiming to build sustainable and affordable housing for new employees in the green industry. Students at the expanding university campus in Skellefteå are also a priority target group. They will drive the transition towards a green economy in northern Sweden.

Part of this construction will be financed by the current loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The SEK 800 million (EUR 70 million) loan will help to promote social inclusion and will also help the municipality to broaden its financing for housing production. For the EIB-financed housing projects, the EU, through the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), has also provided support of around SEK 120 million.
