Elections in Sweden
Elections to the Riksdag, regional councils, and municipal councils are held every four years. The next election is on September 13, 2026.
The right to vote in elections to the Riksdag
You have the right to vote in the elections to the Riksdag provided that you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are at least 18 years old on election day.
- You are a Swedish citizen.
- You are, or have been, listed in the Swedish Population Register.
The right to vote in the elections to the regional and municipal councils
You have the right to vote in elections to the regional and municipal councils if:
- you are at least 18 years old on election day.
You must also be one of the following:
- a Swedish citizen who is listed in the Swedish Population Register as living in the municipality or region in question
- a citizen of an EU country, Iceland or Norway who is listed in the Swedish Population Register as living in the municipality or region in question
- a citizen of a country other than one of those listed above, or a stateless person, who has been listed in the Swedish Population Register for three consecutive years before election day and is listed as living in the municipality or region in question
