Parenting Support

Few things are as important as our relationships with our children. As a parent, you are important; however, it can sometimes be difficult to be the parent you want to be and certain everyday situations can put relationships to the test. This is when you may need support for your parenting.

The municipality’s Parenting Support unit offers free counselling and guidance to parents or other immediate family members of children or young people up to 18 years of age.

The e-service is in Swedish.

Few things in life are as important as our relationships with our children; however, while guiding a child can be a wonderful experience, it can also be a daunting one. Certainly, as a parent we are indispensable, however sometimes it can be difficult to find the energy to be the parent we strive to be. All families with children experience this at times.

There can be a lot of yelling and quarrelling in everyday situations, which put relationships to the test. Your child may not be able to sleep well or does not thrive in school or preschool. Or you may need help to reinforce your child’s resilience and perseverance. Perhaps you need support for your parenting so that you can make a change in your home life.

Who are we?

Parenting Support offers free counselling. The unit is staffed by two experienced social workers. We have a duty of confidentiality and do not keep records. If you need an interpreter, we will arrange it for you.

Parenting Support can offer advice and guidance on day-to-day challenges and give you the tools to help your child in various situations. We meet with parents or other close family members of children and young people up to 18 years of age and offer parenting support individually or in groups.

Our goal is to make sure that you as a parent get advice and support quickly when you feel you need it. Our assistance is individually tailored, based on the needs and wishes of you and your family. We work with you to find common solutions that strengthen relationships and benefit the child's development.
When necessary, we cooperate with other institutions such as preschools, schools, family centres and Region Västerbotten.

If you are unsure about who to turn to or have questions on parenting issues, please do not hesitate to contact us at Parenting Support. You are not alone!

Family counsellors

Family counsellors at family centres are there to help parents with children up to 6 years of age. Family centers is also a meetingplace for parents-to-be.

Skellefteå Municipality has a parenting counsellor affiliated to each of the municipality’s family centres, in Anderstorp in Skellefteå, in Byske and in Ursviken. The service is free and is aimed at pregnant women and couples and parents of children up to 6 years of age.

How can a parenting counsellor support you?

No subject is too small or large to address; sometimes we all need support in our parental role. As a parent, you will have many questions and concerns about your child, perhaps concerning their development or upbringing. Conversations might even deal with your current life situation, such as your parental role, relationships or practical issues. In brief, anything that affects you. We believe that if you feel good as a parent, your child will feel good.

So, how does it work?

Many parents are put in touch with a parenting counsellor via their midwife or paediatric nurse but, of course, you are welcome to contact us directly. Parenting counselling is part of the municipality’s open activities, meaning that no investigation or referral is required before you can access the support. We have a duty of confidentiality and do not keep records. Meetings may take place in one of our family centres, in central Skellefteå, in your home or over the telephone. Advice and support is available quickly when you feel you need it.

Who are we?

Parenting counsellors are trained social workers with many years of experience of parenting support. We are also parents of grown-up children, so we have encountered the challenges presented by parenthood and understand day-to-day family life and experiences during a child’s upbringing.

The ABC programme

The ABC parenting support programme is a series of meetings for parents on how to strengthen family relationships and prevent everyday stress and conflicts. We hold separate ABC meetings for parents of children aged 3–12 and parents of teenagers.

We address issues such as striking a balance between putting our children at the centre and creating harmony around the dinner table. How can we avoid stressful situations? How can we prevent conflict? How can we gain more time to spend with our children? As a parent, you are never alone in pondering these questions. To attend these group meetings, you will need to complete the form below:

Register for the ABC programme

Once you submit your registration you will receive a confirmation email. Register only those individuals who intent to participate in the ABC parenting support group. We will contact you with details when a place becomes available.

Upcoming ABC group meetings

Register using the form below if you would like to take part when group activities begin again. Please state which location you wish to attend. We will be in touch when the place and date are finalised.

The aim of ABC group meetings for parents of teenagers is to strengthen the parent/child relationship and to contribute to the wellbeing of the teenager.

During autumn 2021, ABC Teenagers will be included in a study of parent groups and online support led by Karolinska Institutet. Anyone registering will therefore either take part in either an ABC Teenagers parent group or attend an online course called Föräldrawebben.
