Our courses in automation and industrial maintenance offer you great flexibility to build a strong skills profile. You can take a course part-time or combine two courses to study full-time during the same time period. You can also choose to add more courses over time—all to develop your CV at the pace and to the extent that suits you.

We offer:

  • PLC 1 – Distributed Control Systems Level 1 (DIST1000X)
  • Mechanical Maintenance Level 1 (MEKA1000X)
  • Measurement and Control Technology Level 1 (MATC1000X)
  • Maintenance – Hydraulics and Pneumatics Level 1 (UNDA1000X)

The course offerings are updated regularly and may change over time. 

The purpose of the course is to develop students’ ability to perform basic PLC programming using Ladder (LD) and Function Block Diagram (FBD). It also covers methods and concepts in industrial automation, with a focus on communication and interaction between components. Both theoretical and practical components are included to encourage continuous learning and professional development.

The goal is to equip students with the skills to prevent and troubleshoot errors in automated systems and work safely. The course will provide students with the opportunity to plan tasks and work hands-on with the TIA Portal programming tool.

Classes and lab sessions take place on-site at VUX, Campus Skellefteå. The course also includes self-study.

Course Fee

The purpose of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance work, with a focus on identifying, preventing, and rectifying faults in technical systems. It covers methods for disassembling, assembling, and testing the functionality of machine components, as well as the use of technical documentation.

The goal is to develop students’ ability to work safely and systematically with maintenance equipment, as well as to document and communicate their work. The course also provides an understanding of how maintenance work contributes to sustainable development and efficient operations.

Classes and lab sessions take place on-site at VUX, Campus Skellefteå. The course also includes self-study.

This course is designed for those who want to understand how process control works in industrial applications. The course provides an introduction to measurement and control technology, with a focus on fundamental principles such as PID control, process control, and measurement technology. The course introduces you to how to use the ABB 800xA system. It is ideal for beginners who want to build a technical foundation for future studies or careers in process automation.

During the course, you will work with basic measurement technology for parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level. You will also learn about sensors, relays, and components such as valves and actuators, their functions, symbols, and adjustments. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience with signal measurement, risk analysis, troubleshooting, and documentation to develop practical skills for real-world industrial applications.

You will gain practical experience in monitoring and controlling processes, interpreting diagrams, and improving your understanding of how a process works.

This course provides you with knowledge about the maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. You will learn about components such as valves, cylinders, and pumps, as well as how pressure is generated and energy is transferred in these systems.

You’ll work on wiring exercises, technical measurements, and troubleshooting, and use drawings and manuals to solve problems. The course also covers workplace safety issues and how to communicate within a maintenance organization. The course is perfect for those who want to work hands-on with technology and contribute to a sustainable and efficient industry.

Eligibility

  • You are eligible for adult education starting July 1 of the year you turn 20. If you have a final certificate, an upper secondary school diploma or a study certificate from upper secondary school from the Swedish school system, you are eligible even if you are younger than 20.
  • Course materials are available in both Swedish and English. It is important that you have the prerequisites to succeed in upper secondary-level studies. For this, you need English proficiency equivalent to English 5.
  • If you do not have a grade at the level specified in the eligibility requirements, you can demonstrate your proficiency through a placement test; read more at Level Assessment External link. and follow the instructions.
  • In 2026, all vocational programs will recruit nationally.
    If you are registered in a municipality other than Skellefteå, you can apply for and participate in a program in Skellefteå in 2026 without approval from your home municipality.

Admission process

The admission process begins once the application period has ended. The admission process is expected to take a few weeks. Notifications regarding receipt of your application and admission decisions will be sent via email. If you are admitted to the program, you must actively accept your admission offer in order to keep your place. It is important that you provide the correct email address and phone number in your application.

  • Applicable legislation
