Perch - Perca fluviatilis

The perch is our most common fish and can be found all along our coast and in most of the more than 1500 lakes in the municipality. They often swim in schools and can grow to over 50 cm in length, but perhaps more common is around 20 cm.

Fishing method: The easiest and perhaps most common way to catch a perch is to fish with a worm from a boat or jetty. The next step is a casting rod with a jig or spinner, and during the winter it is excellent to pick up perch with a shiny pirk and maggot.

When and where: Perch can be fished year-round but may be especially active during the warmer months of summer and well into fall. They may also be willing to bite under the ice in the spring sun.

Perch like to stay close to places where they can seek both food and shelter, looking for structure. Fish along the edges of reeds, rocks, shallows, dead trees and jetties. Larger individuals can be harder to find, but try along deep edges and with a little patience you'll be well on your way.
