Roach, Rutilus rutilus
Rumors of "sour roach" are all over town, have you tried it? The roach, like the ibis and bream, is a carp fish. It is shimmering silver and can be recognized by its red eyes and small mouth. In Finland and the Baltic States, it is harvested for food. There you can get it pickled as herring, for example.

Fishing method: Baiting is both a simple and effective method to trick roach into biting. You don't need any sophisticated equipment, just a rod and line, a small float and a small hook and you're well on your way. Fish close to the bottom and bait the hook with worm, maggot or corn.
Pimpla also works well, use a classic pirk intended for perch. Bait the hook with maggot or worm and fish close to the bottom.
When and where: Fishing for roach is often good after spawning in spring and they remain active throughout the summer. The roach are often found in bays with soft bottoms and lots of vegetation. Depths of 1-2 m are suitable during the summer and fishing is therefore possible even from the shore or jetty.
If you want to fish for roach in late fall or winter, it is not uncommon for them to congregate in the bay's deep cavity.
