A new meeting place emerges on Campus Skellefteå

Education and research are important as Skellefteå develops, and to reach the goal of a population of 90,000 people by 2030. Plans are now underway for a unique building where several different organizations will interact. Construction begins in 2023 and will be completed at the turn of the year 2025/2026.

The new energy-smart building will be 6,000 square meters in size divided between seven floors, and situated west of the library on Campus Skellefteå. The interior will have open spaces and large glass sections, overlooking the Skellefte river. The building will be visible from different places in Skellefteå, from bridges in the east and west to the walking path on the north side of the river.

The new building will be a vibrant meeting place, test bed and lab environment for the electrification of society. The building will be home to the competence center Arctic Center of Energy, which is run by Luleå University of Technology, Northvolt, Skellefteå Kraft, RISE and Skellefteå municipality.

The building's frame will be made of wood which is in line with Skellefteå municipality's wood construction strategy and high ambitions for sustainable construction. To ensure the quality of the sustainability ambitions, the building will be certified according to Zero CO2 and to the Miljöbyggnad classification system, gold level. The building will be one of the first in Sweden to be certified according to Miljöbyggnad's newest, more comprehensive certification 4.0. The Zero CO2 certification also stands out, being one of the first to be implemented in northern Sweden.
