The area around Vitberget

A place that offers outdoor activities for all of Skellefteå

Vitberget will be developed with new ski slopes and a 5.7 km long asphalt track for roller skis, among other things. The track will have different loops, of both flatter and more hilly character. It will be suitable for a wide range of people, including children, exercisers and elite skiers. The track will be completed in the fall of 2025.

Vitberget is a popular outdoor area located in the northern part of Skellefteå and offers a wide range of activities, regardless of the season. The area has several hiking trails and ski trails, which meander over Sjungande dalen, Moröhöjden and Solbacken. It is a place for exercisers, elite athletes and families with children.

Major work is now underway to develop Vitberget, both the surface and the range. A first step is to build a 5.7 kilometer long asphalt track for roller sports. Some routes will be flatter, which means that even exercisers and those who get around in wheelchairs can use the track, and have access to outdoor life on Vitberget. In addition, the paved surface will be supplemented with a gravel surface for walking and running. The paved areas will be used as ski tracks during the winter.

Some suggestions from residents on the further development of Vitberget:

  • an extended track for cross-country skiing with artificial snow
  • a new descent for tobogganing and sledging from the top of the slalom slope
  • expanding and increasing the number of hiking trails
  • more barbecue areas, shelters and picnic areas
  • larger pools and more water slides at Vitbergsbadet
  • an adventure course in connection with Skellefteå camping
  • a food service in connection with ski tracks and camping.

The track will be 5.7 km long paved track. The track is being built partly in response to requests from ski clubs, which have long sought a safer environment for their athletes during the bare-ground period, when they train for the winter season by roller skiing. A paved track reduces the risk of accidents. Children and young people do not need to ski on busy roads. There are multi-sport tracks in many other municipalities, including Piteå, Luleå, Umeå and Lycksele.

To preserve as much of the natural environment as possible, the new multisport track will be built on existing ski trails. This means that 90 percent of the course is already open land. Only where curves need to be straightened and where a larger area is needed for safety reasons will new land be used. Some felling will take place. The route is planned to save sensitive areas with high natural values. Ground works started in the fall of 2024, and continue as long as the weather permits, before resuming in spring 2025.

We will publish more information and news about the track on this website as work progresses. As the new track is being built largely on existing ski tracks, some of these will be re-routed during construction. You can read more about it here skelleftea.se/skidor

Which ski trails are operated during the winter season?

How long will the track be?

It will be a 5.7 kilometer paved track. The course will have different loops, of both flatter and more hilly character. This will suit a wide range of people, including children, recreational skiers and elite skiers.

Why is the multi-track being built?

The track is being built partly in response to requests from ski clubs, which have long wanted a safer training environment for their athletes to roller ski during the off-road season. A major advantage of the track is that it reduces the risk of accidents, as children and young people do not have to ski alongside busy roads.

The track will also be used for other rolling activities such as inline skating and cycling. Some parts will be flatter, which means that exercisers and wheelchair users can also use the track, and have access to outdoor life on Vitberget. In addition, the paved surface will be supplemented with a gravel surface for walking and running.

Can I stay in the area during construction?

The construction area is full of heavy machinery at work, so for everyone's safety we ask you to avoid walking there. The contractor needs access to the area to work safely and efficiently. In the Vitberg area, you can instead use the jogging and ski trails on the western side, towards Sjungande dalen, or north towards Nöppelberget.

How will the work affect the ski trails?

Several ski trails will be re-routed during the construction work, information about this will come closer to the ski season.

Why is the multi-track located on Vitberget?

The multi-purpose track is being built in the Vitberget area, among other things, to be able to maintain a high standard and have a hilly terrain, but also to be able to use existing electric light trails. Many associations also want the track to be located there.

How will the multi-purpose track and the construction work affect the environment on Vitberget?

To preserve as much natural value as possible, the new multi-purpose track will be built on existing ski and running trails. This means that 90 percent of the course is already open land. Only where curves need to be straightened and where a larger area is needed for safety reasons will new land be used. The project has also planned the track to save sensitive areas with high natural values.

Why is construction starting in the fall?

One season is not enough to complete the multi-purpose track. That's why as much heavy groundwork as possible is being done in the fall so that work can continue in the spring and the track can be completed in 2025.

Why can't I ski in the area, the construction will not be going on then?

If snow is packed in the area, it will be more difficult to start work again in the spring.

How long will the work last?

It will start in the fall of 2024 and work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025.

This page will be updated with more questions and answers as work progresses. You can follow what is happening in the Vitberg area on this page.

What will it cost?

The whole investment is estimated to cost around SEK 40 million. Part 1, which includes the construction of a 5.7-kilometer paved track, is estimated to cost around SEK 27 million. For part 2, which includes the entrance at Solbacken, the start and play area, and parking, there is no political decision yet.

The plan is for Vitbergsbacken to have four new slopes: a children's slope, a tobogganing slope, a family slope and a medium difficulty slope. The slope will also be framed with a plank in the west and one in the east.

The functions of the planks are to prevent downhill skiers from entering the cross-country ski track or toboggan run. The western plank will also serve as a windbreak and sun shelf.
