Big Band in Swedish - Skellefteå Big band plays Evert Taube and Swedish jazz classics
Skellefteå Big Band plays Evert Taube and Swedish jazz classics.
Vocal soloists: Hans-Olov Furberg and Ulrica Lundmark.
Musical director: Åsa Granlund Jonsson.
We always have Evert Taubes music close to our hearts and it has in many ways defined our Swedish summer, with songs such as Calle Schewen's waltz, Sjösala waltz, and more.
And now, in the middle of the snowy winter, Skellefteå Big Band can invite you to a concert with Taube in big band taping! And not only that - we also play songs associated with some of our greatest Swedish jazz heroes.
Vocal soloists are Hans-Olov Furberg, born from Skellefteå, and our own Ulrica Lundmark. The band is led by Åsa Granlund Jonsson.
The concert's guest soloist Hans-Olov Furberg has his roots in Skellefteå. After training at the music academy in Piteå, he has worked with music and culture in many forms, both as a teacher, composer, pianist and vocal soloist. He is a well-known music profile in Västernorrland, where he has lived and worked since the 1990s.
The arrangement of melodies by Evert Taube was performed with Hans-Olov as soloist for the first time in spring 2023.
Skellefteå Big Band started in the late 1950s, when active musicians in the town gathered under the leadership of saxophonist Thure Viklund. In the 1980s, the band was led by Nisse Ericsson, who was also the principal of the music school at the time. After a few years of hiatus, the band was started in its current form in 1988/89, then with Dick Grubbström and Hans Westman as leaders. Later, Elmer Granlund was leader for many years, as was Thomas Nyström. Today, it is Åsa Granlund Jonsson who holds the baton and ensures that the swing is kept at the highest level.
The band has always nurtured the classic big band repertoire, with songs by Basie, Ellington, etc. But there are also plenty of modern arrangements in the folder. In addition, many of the fine local organizers Nisse Ericsson and Dick Grubbström.
Among the soloists who appeared with the band are Putte Wickman, Hayati Kafé, Sharon Dyall, Ann-Kristin Hedmark, Claes Janson, Peter Getz, Christina Gustafsson, Joel Nunez, and others.
