Welcome to the concert of Oscar winner Rachel Portman, Tipping Points, featuring poems by the poet Nick Drake. The Norrlandsoperan synfoniorkester will perform the piece under the direction of Jessica Cottis from Australia. The soloist is the German violinist Niklas Liepe.

Portman's music is known from films such as The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, and Emma. For the latter, she won an Oscar in 1994, becoming the first female composer ever to receive this accolade.

Her concert Tipping Points, composed for violin and orchestra in 2023, is a moving work in six movements, each introduced by a poem from the British poet and novelist Nick Drake. Here, we will hear them recited by the actress Gráinne Dromgoole.

Speaking of films, Mozart's ethereally beautiful "Gran Partita" plays a central role in Peter Shaffer's 1984 film Amadeus. The reason for the suite's name is somewhat of a mystery; Mozart never used the term "

The mystery also characterizes tonight's opening work, Caterina Barbieri's Knot of Spirit, whose otherworldly sounds form a hallucinatory kaleidoscope.

Enjoy the evening!
