Jannike Lundgren och Jens Unosson

SkeLitt: The nature speaks, but do we want to listen?

Two authors, each with a newly released book, come together for a joint appearance where the common starting point revolves around questions about humanity’s place on Earth and in history.

Till minnet av Lajka (In Memory of Lajka), 2024, is Jannike Lundgren’s second novel. It depicts the protagonist Ellen’s work in home care somewhere in Västerbotten and the people and fates she encounters there at different stages of life. On another level, it addresses the relationship between humans and animals, and our position on and attitude toward the planet. It takes place between life and death, the large and the small, and everything in between.

Luften som kunde tala (The Air That Could Speak), 2024, is a lyrical work by Jens Unosson, a kind of civilizational critique in the form of a long poem. On one hand, it is about the days on a small farm, the people, animals, and trees that have lived there through centuries. On the other hand, it tackles life and death from a slightly esoteric perspective.

What both works have in common is that they are firmly rooted in the Västerbotten rural areas and address nearly identical themes: civilizational critique, nature versus culture, animal rights, among others.

Jannike Lundgren is a trained librarian and literary scholar, currently working as an assistant editor alongside her writing. Her debut novel came in 2016 with Nu ser man hästen på Sonfjället (Now You Can See the Horse on Sonfjället), which also focused on rural life and animal rights issues.

Jens Unosson is a self-sufficient farmer, writer, conservationist, and musician – perhaps best known as a member of The Spacious Mind, a band that has released numerous albums and toured both in Europe and the USA. As a writer, he frequently contributes to outlets such as Miljömagasinet, Dagens ETC, and Dala-Demokraten. The Air That Could Speak is his lyrical debut.
