About the movie
The film is a documentary about people with intellectual disabilities who have been particularly vulnerable to social exclusion and have been treated in a ruthless and inhumane way. The story is told by Ida and Emma, two brilliant stars from the Glada Hudik Theater.
It covers a period in Swedish history that many are unaware of, and that is why Pär Johansson, along with Glada Hudik Theater, wants to share this story. The documentary It Could Have Been Us takes us back in time, from the opening of the Institute for Racial Biology in Uppsala in 1922 to the experiments at the Vipeholm institution on people with intellectual disabilities. The story is partly based on letters, including those written by a boy named Olle to his mother from the Vipeholm institution. These letters were never sent.
