New album! Huge tour! We must tell you about this!
In a way, Jakob Hellman is nothing but his songs. And I have all the respect for that, truly, because to be someone whose art becomes their life — or perhaps it’s the other way around, where their life is their art — is an impressive feat. He has never done anything less brilliant than his debut album ...och stora havet.
It's admirable and indisputable. You get the sense, no, the firm belief, that it will always be this way. Almost without knowing much about him biographically, aside from this... treasure of songs. It almost always feels a bit silly to use the term “song treasure,” but there’s no other word that fits.
Let me start again. Jakob was, for a long time, the great savior and innovator of Swedish pop. But after his debut, he disappeared. He made occasional performances and small tours, but no new album, none of those amazing new songs were recorded.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he came back with an equally strong collection of songs 30 years later, with the album Äntligen borta. And since then, he has repeatedly proven himself as a formidable live artist, embarking on ever-larger tours and proving that he is more than just nostalgia, more than just a blast from the past for a night out with old friends. But what do you do after that? Well, you keep at it, of course. Grateful and persistent.
Let me start again. But where to begin? In childhood Vuollerim or teenage Falun? Or with a personal memory, like when we sat in a tour bus together, listening to Ted Gärdestad, and life felt pretty fantastic? Or when I saw him live in Boden shortly after his debut and cried from how good he was? Or when I got to sing with him years later? Or when he borrowed my band, Nerverna, for a small summer tour and how proud I was then?
All I really know is that a new album is coming this spring! It’s called Slutet gott, and of course, it’s going to be the best, just like always. And he’s going on a massive tour! Jakob Hellman remains the savior and innovator of Swedish pop.
