Sewing Course: Repair, Alter, Create New from Old

A course for those interested in sewing who want to deepen their skills in all aspects of sewing, enabling them to independently repair, alter, and create something new from old clothes or leftover textiles.

During the course, you will work on your own projects that you bring to the sessions. Perhaps you want to transform your grandmother's old cotton sheets into a summer dress? Or sew second-hand tablecloths into cushion covers?

During the course, you will learn:

Various sewing techniques
How to resize or adjust fit
Basic pattern-making
Altering patterns
Attaching/replacing zippers

Participants are required to bring their own sewing machines and sewing machine needles. You will also need supplies such as hand sewing needles, pins, measuring tape, seam ripper, thread, and fabric or projects of your choice. If you do not have your own sewing machine, a limited number are available for loan. Please contact us if needed.

Being able to sew on a sewing machine, repair, remake, and alter textiles is not only practical but also rewarding in many ways. It provides independence and fosters creativity by enabling self-expression. Repairing textiles reduces environmental impact by extending their lifespan, thus lowering the need for constant purchases. It also saves time and money by allowing you to perform minor repairs and adjustments at home instead of relying on professional services.

The group meets eight consecutive Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 8:15 PM, starting on February 6. During the sixth and seventh sessions (March 13 and 20), the instructor will be away. These sessions will be rescheduled to April 3 and 10.

Course instructor: Susanne Holmgren, former store manager of our local textile shop with extensive experience in sewing and textiles.

Course start: February 6, 2025
