Kiruna mine's first female driller tells her story
IngMari Lundmark, 81 years old, talks about her years as LKAB's first female driller since the ban on women in mines was lifted in 1978. For eight years, IngMari stood on a drilling rig at the front of the Kiruna mine and lifted two tons of drill steel per shift.
What was it like coming to such a totally male-dominated world where few believed she would be up to the job?
There will be hilarious stories about inappropriate work clothes, wooden ass and sore muscles, but also stories about how she was received in the mine, how she tried to fit in and be accepted, and what battles she chose to fight.
Through IngMari's daughter, Anneli, we get a historical look back at women in mines and answers to the question of why women were banned, who led the fight to remove the ban, resistance from unexpected quarters and examples of other female pioneers who broke new ground in the Kiruna mine.
