Tips

Here are some tips for throwing a good neighborhood party

What will we do? What should we eat? Here are some tips if you need them.

Planing

Involve more neighbors already in the planning stage
This will make more people feel involved and increase the chances of more people coming. Create a simple committee if possible.

Invite in good time
Send the invitation at least 2 weeks before. You can use notes in the mailbox, a joint WhatsApp group message, or create a Facebook event.

Food and drinks

Keep it simple: potluck or barbecue
Ask everyone to bring something - a dish, salad, snack or drink. Alternatively: coordinate a joint barbecue. See recipe suggestions below.

Think about special diets
Have options for vegetarians, children, and allergy sufferers. Ask people to label their dishes.

Activities and atmosphere

Games and activities for children and adults

See tips below.

Music (but with respect for neighbors)
Create a playlist in advance. Be mindful of the noise level, especially if the party is in the evening.

Welcome greeting
Start with a short introduction and welcome everyone. Encourage new neighbors to introduce themselves.

Practicalities: location, seating and weather

Choose a good location
A courtyard, street (if allowed), green area or garden. Think about accessibility and toilets.

Seating and tables
Ask people to bring their own chairs or picnic blankets. Tables can be gathered from different households.

Have a plan B in case of rain
A tent, garage or a spare day can save the party.

Sustainable

Think environmentally friendly
Use reusable or compostable items. Have clear sorting for recycling.

Cleaning up
End the party by cleaning up together - it's quick if everyone helps.

Follow up
Share photos and thank everyone who participated! It can also lead to more future initiatives. Like next year's big neighborhood party. For example!

Games

What you need: At least two sacks of some kind.

  1. Mark a beginning and an end.
  2. Jump in the sack, first to finish wins.

Perfect for young and old alike. Play classics like "Little Frogs" or the "Gärdebyl Song" and pause suddenly - everyone will freeze in a funny pose!

What you need: Dry biscuits and decide on a tune to whistle.

  1. Eat 3-4 biscuits, chew and try to WHISTLE.
  2. Whoever can whistle first wins.

What you need: A long rope that is not too thin and a judge.

  1. Attach a marker to the middle of the rope, a red piece of rope for example.
  2. Divide into teams of equal strength.
  3. Place the rope so that the marker has a reference point. When one team has pulled the other over the reference point, they have won.

Fill a bucket with water on one side and place an empty one on the other. Everyone in the team should fill one cup, run and empty it into the other bucket. First to fill - wins!

What you need: A fairly hard A3 paper (preferably two different colors of paper for each team) and rubber bands.

  1. Make a cone out of the paper and staple it together.
  2. Make two holes for rubber bands at the large opening to attach the cone in front of the eyes.
  3. Thread the rubber bands around the ears, making sure there is a small hole at the end.
  4. Play football as usual - but without seeing anything, of course. A fun summer game that builds team spirit.

What you need: At least two spoons and as many eggs.

  1. Put the spoon in your mouth and balance the egg on it around a track.
  2. Then it's time for the next participant to do the same round with a new spoon, but the same egg.
  3. The first team to finish wins.

What you need: A tarpaulin or a roll of garbage bags, a large ball, water, inflatable pools.

  1. Lay out the tarp or garbage bags on the track (where you run). Pour soap over them.
  2. At each corner, place a smaller children's pool.
  3. Then just run according to the rules of the game.

What is needed: At least two sticks that are about 1-1.5 meters long.

  1. The participant runs to the stick and holds one end against the forehead while the other end is on the ground.
  2. Spin ten laps as fast as possible.
  3. Run back to the team as straight as possible.

What you need: A cube game

  1. Place five cubes in two rows.
  2. Both teams stand behind the rows.
  3. Participants have to throw down the closest cube, then pick up the throwing stick and hand it to the next one.
  4. The team that gets all the cubes down first wins.

A perfect activity for the music lover! Can be easily adapted to children by choosing children's songs!

What you need: A team leader and a playlist of songs.

  1. Play the intros of the songs and let the participants compete to see who can sing the song first!

To make it more difficult, you can ask questions about each song, such as when it was released, who is singing or what city the band is from.
