SE26 Showcases Skellefteå and Explores Sustainable Solutions

Something truly unique is happening here in Skellefteå. This city – and northern Sweden as a whole – has become the epicentre of an extraordinary societal transformation. After decades of population stagnation, a determined effort was launched in 2012 to strengthen Skellefteå’s appeal and lay the foundations for long-term growth. In just six years, Skellefteå has experienced a level of growth rarely seen in European cities. We are proud of our shared journey and want to share it with the world through Society Expo 2026 – a global event that shines a spotlight on Skellefteå and explores sustainable solutions to the challenges we face.

As our circumstances evolve, we are met with new challenges. Yet, this transformation is also creating opportunities. Innovation, adaptability and collaboration are driving forces in strengthening our region and developing solutions with an impact far beyond Sweden’s borders. Our aim is to discover knowledge and tools that not only benefit us locally, but also inspire globally.

We are proud of our collective progress and we want to showcase it. In 2026, Society Expo will take place – a global event where we highlight Skellefteå and explore sustainable solutions to the pressing challenges of our time. The goal is to find knowledge and tools that make a real difference – here at home and around the world.

Our commitment to sustainable development is at the core of Skellefteå’s strategic plan – Skellefteå 2030. With a strong focus on education, employment, healthcare, care services, recreational opportunities and openness – and a comprehensive approach to environmental, economic and social sustainability – this strategy forms the foundation of Society Expo 2026.

We are now in the midst of a rapid transformation that calls for bold action. With the Expo, we want to foster new collaborations where citizens, decision-makers, and researchers come together to test and develop ideas, solutions and tools that can drive real change. The Expo offers a unique platform to both showcase successful initiatives and shine a light on the challenges we face – with the event itself acting as a catalyst for continued development.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of all is social sustainability. It’s also a theme we especially want to highlight during the Expo. We aim to present successful projects that others can learn from, while also addressing the complex challenges we face – where Society Expo 2026 becomes a driving force for growth and innovation.

And perhaps most importantly: we do this together. Everyone is part of Skellefteå’s development – and everyone is welcome to contribute. Together, we are discovering how to achieve a fast yet sustainable societal transformation.
