Skills supply

Skellefteå and Tekniska museet create confidence in the future.

Skellefteå is facing its biggest challenge in the ongoing social transformation, following the redundancies at Boliden Rönnskär and the bankruptcy of Northvolt. At the same time, the site has a strong history of industrial innovation and adaptation, which has made it a place that is naturally equipped for social transformation. Through a joint effort between Skellefteå Municipality, Exploratoriet, Skellefteå Kraft, Skellefteå Museum and Tekniska museet, new learning environments are now being created to equip the next generation of engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs - from an early age.

SEE Future and Tidsresan Skellefteå - collaborations for the future.

In the spring of 2024, a letter of intent was signed between Tekniska museet and actors in Skellefteå that led to the SEE Future project. The initiative aims to give young people an active role in the ongoing transformation of society. Through educational tools, interactive experiences and collaboration between schools, business and cultural institutions, learning environments and meeting places are now being created where the future becomes concrete and tangible.

SEE Future creates a model for how the municipality, business and cultural institutions can collaborate to strengthen the supply of skills, create attractive educational environments and ensure that the innovators of the future get the inspiration and knowledge they need.

As part of SEE Future, preparations are in full swing to be able to develop a new innovative and interactive AI-driven gaming experience for children and young people by the fall of 2025 - Tidsresan Skellefteå. Through games, dialog and technology, they understand their role in the green transition and learn to see opportunities in social development. Tidsresan is a ground-breaking idea that SEE Future hopes to get continued funding for, which can become an important part of Skellefteå's future education and innovation initiatives.

SEE Future and Tidsresan Skellefteå are important initiatives for raising interest in STEM subjects and creating confidence in the future among young people, which is especially crucial in light of the recent challenges in the region.

STEM strategy - a driving force for the future skills supply.

In February 2025, the government presented a new national STEM strategy (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) with the aim of strengthening interest in these subjects throughout the education system, from preschool to higher education and working life. Sweden, and Skellefteå in particular, is facing a major skills challenge where more young people need to choose technical and scientific careers to ensure the country's competitiveness and innovation capacity.

One of the people who has been given a central role in the work on Sweden's new STEM strategy is the Director of the Museum of Science and Technology, Peter Skogh, who has been appointed to the national delegation.

"In times of uncertainty, it is crucial that we continue to invest in knowledge and innovation. Skellefteå has demonstrated outstanding adaptability and drive, and it is precisely through investments in education and collaboration that we build a sustainable future. We at the Museum of Technology see the SEE Future project as a shining example of how we can create inspiration and confidence in the future among young people," says Peter Skogh, Director of the Museum of Technology in Stockholm.

"The involvement of Peter Skogh, who heads the Technical Museum and is now part of the national STEM delegation, gives us a unique opportunity to strengthen our educational development and make Skellefteå a role model for the future of learning," says Christer Westlund, Head of Upper Secondary School in Skellefteå Municipality.
