Solvik Folk High School creates sustainable performing arts for Society Expo 2026
In the run-up to Society Expo 2026, the stage is being set and sustainability is not just a theme, but a principle that will permeate everything SE26 does. One of this year's most creative preparations comes from Solvik Folk High School, where students are currently working on creating large art flowers in recycled steel.
The commission came from set designer Åse Persson, who wanted to find a local actor who could both work artistically and at the same time share Society Expo's view of sustainable transition. The result is a collaboration where materials that would otherwise have been discarded are given new life - in the form of colorful, robust flower sculptures that will be visible on campus during the 14 days of the expo.

- "Working with reuse fits perfectly with Society Expo's idea of bringing people, ideas and resources together in a sustainable way," says set designer Åse Persson. "This is art that both arouses curiosity and tells us something about the future we are building together.
At Solvik, the work has become a practical learning experience in both craft and circular creation. Students combine metalworking, design and group work, all to create something that stands firm in both form and idea.
- We have done several recycling projects before and have some experience of it now. It feels great to be a part of this and it will be fun to see what it looks like in the end, says student Ella Lindgren.

The work is fully in line with Society Expo's vision of creating good energy between people, and with Skellefteå's sustainability strategy, where co-creation, creativity and ability to change are highlighted as central driving forces.

When Society Expo opens on May 27, 2026, Solvik's artwork will meet thousands of visitors - and become a reminder of what happens when local engagement, recycling and creative power come together.
