Peab – The Nordic Region’s Community Builder

Peab is the Nordic community developer with a local presence. Focusing on our own resources and local partners, we develop, construct, and build the everyday environments where life takes place. Peab has extensive experience with large and complex projects in northern Sweden, many with a strong sustainability profile, such as ACE Powerhouse and the expansion of the Port of Skellefteå.

ACE Powerhouse and Port of Skellefteå are projects that Peab is able to carry out thanks to our many skilled local employees and their in-depth knowledge and strong commitment to the region. Peab currently has approximately 1,000 employees from Kiruna to Borlänge.

In Skellefteå, in addition to ACE Powerhouse and Port of Skellefteå, Peab has also built 87 Nordic Ecolabel-certified homes in the Framtiden housing cooperative, new facilities for the emergency services, a renovation of the municipal and museum archives, and work to raise the height of the Hötjärnsmagasinet for Boliden.

Sustainable Community Development

– At Peab, we have a clear responsibility toward our communities. That responsibility begins with our role as an employer and business partner and extends all the way through the production chain and out into the surrounding local community. This naturally includes our environmental and climate responsibility,” says Susanne Hallberg, regional manager at Peab.

The proportion of women in the industry and at Peab is still far too low. The greatest gender disparity is found in production-related professions, where only about seven to eight percent of those applying to Peab from relevant hands-on training programs are women.

– As one of the Nordic region’s largest infrastructure developers, we want to take the lead on these issues. Among other initiatives, we run a women’s apprenticeship program called Byggåret to encourage more women to take an interest in the skilled trades. This fall, the fourth round of the program will begin, says Susanne Hallberg.

The construction and civil engineering industry has a significant environmental and climate impact. Peab itself states that it affects the environment and climate through its own operations and through the impact caused by its suppliers and customers. At the same time, environmental and climate changes affect the conditions under which the company operates. Peab is working purposefully and step by step to reduce its environmental and climate footprint, in line with its own goals. This also requires close collaboration with our partners in the value chain, including both customers and suppliers.

Involvement in SE26

Peab is actively involved in several aspects of SE26. Together with other stakeholders, Peab participates in activities related to the Campus ACE project, where Peab is working in a collaborative construction partnership with the Municipality of Skellefteå. Peab will participate in Skellefteå Municipality’s event on June 2, focusing on how sustainable construction processes can be implemented today and in the future, as well as in Port of Skellefteå’s event on June 3, which will address the port and the future of ports and shipping. The events will feature panel discussions and lectures, and on June 3, there will also be a tour of the work being done at the port.

Representatives from Peab will also be on site in a container on Trädgårdsgatan, where they will welcome visitors of all ages. There, visitors can find inspiration, get to know Peab, and learn about the projects Peab has helped develop in Skellefteå in recent years, visualized by local artist Anna-Karin Karlsson.

Peab is also participating in SE26 Talks: Climate & Environment on June 1, where it will be represented by Elisabet Stadler, Environmental Manager, in both a lecture and a panel discussion focusing on circular sustainability and how we can create long-term sustainable solutions.
