SE26 project

Port of Skellefteå

Port of Skellefteå is investing around SEK 1.4 billion in a new port area on the north side of Kallholmsfjärden. The investment will equip the port for larger vessels, increased cargo volumes and more efficient transportation - a crucial piece of the puzzle to meet the region's growing business community when the facility is completed. The focus is on enabling sustainable, intermodal logistics with minimal climate impact.

Sustainable port, global infrastructure

The project meets today's major societal challenges by:

  • Ensuring fossil-free operation, electrification and energy-efficient transportation.
  • Reducing climate impact through intermodality (sea, rail and road).
  • The construction and civil engineering process has a clear sustainability profile, using climate-smart materials such as ECO-Concrete, ECO-Asphalt, and fossil-free steel (SSAB Zero™).

The port strengthens Skellefteå's local and regional role as a green logistics hub and improves the conditions for climate-smart industry, both at national and international level. Short- and long-term effects can be followed via key figures such as freight volumes, reduced emissions and new establishments. Sustainability permeates the entire process, from planning and construction to operation and future development.

The project also opens up opportunities for partnerships with academia and business in logistics and green technology and contributes to the vision "A sustainable place for a better everyday life" by enabling the transport of the future.

Co-funded by the European Union

Future-proof intermodality, the transport of goods using multiple modes of transport, creates the conditions for sustainable and efficient freight transport. The goal is for the project to lead to the development of climate-adapted intermodal mobility throughout the entire region.

Questions and answers about Port of Skellefteå

The project meets climate challenges through electrification and fossil-free operation, improves mobility via shipping and intermodal solutions, and strengthens the region's competitiveness and skills supply by enabling sustainable transport for the growing industry.

Innovative features such as one of the world's first all-electric cranes and energy-efficient solutions are accelerating the transition towards fossil-free transport and a circular economy.

Locally, jobs and sustainable infrastructure are created, regionally the logistics system for northern Sweden is strengthened, and internationally Skellefteå's role as an export and import hub for climate-smart industry increases.

In the short term: new areas and capacity for larger transports, improved logistics for business.
Long term: establishment of Skellefteå as a green logistics center, measurable via freight volume, reduced emissions and number of new business investments.

The port project has a clear sustainability profile and is being built with materials and methods that reduce the climate footprint. This includes ECO-Concrete and ECO-Asphalt with lower climate impact, as well as SSAB Zero™ steel piles, made from recycled scrap steel and produced virtually without fossil carbon emissions.

The port will also feature fossil-free operations, electrification, and investments in energy efficiency and automation solutions that minimize resource use. In addition, good working conditions and a safe work environment are being created, strengthening both efficiency and the project’s social sustainability over time.

Through these efforts, a modern port is being built that supports global infrastructure while taking responsibility for future generations.

Yes, especially on issues of sustainable logistics, electrification and international transport flows, there is a need for collaboration with industry, academia and cross-border partners to maximize impact.

Target groups are industrial companies, logistics operators, investors, decision-makers and residents. Communication is done through the municipality's and port's websites, the news media, EU reports and dialogue meetings.

The project contributes directly to the vision by creating a greener, more efficient infrastructure that benefits both business competitiveness and the daily lives of residents through reduced emissions and more jobs.
