A catalyst for sustainable transformation

Skellefteå and northern Sweden have become the epicentre of an extraordinary societal transformation. After decades of population stagnation, work began in 2012 to enhance Skellefteå's appeal and develop a unified strategy for growth. In 2017, the establishment of large-scale battery industry began, leading to a level of growth in Skellefteå over the past six years that few European cities have seen before. As conditions change, we now face new challenges. The transformation continues, and through adaptation and collaboration, we have the opportunity to strengthen our region. In 2026, we will host Society Expo 2026, a global platform focused on innovative solutions for sustainable societal transformation.

An arena for the exchange of ideas
Skellefteå has grown rapidly in a short time. We aim for sustainable societal development, which is the foundation of our development strategy, Skellefteå 2030. This includes education, jobs, healthcare, leisure opportunities, openness, and much more. By sustainability, we mean environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The development strategy forms the foundation for Society Expo 2026.

Creating an attractive society
Society Expo 2026 places a special emphasis on social sustainability, addressing the question of how to create a robust and attractive society where people not only want to work but also live and thrive, especially in times of rapid change.

It’s about recognising the important role you play in creating a place that not only offers interesting jobs but also builds an attractive environment that is great to live in, continues Helena Renström.

The leadership behind the transformation
Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Chief Executive of Skellefteå Municipality, is open about the challenges brought by rapid growth. Sundin Jonsson emphasises the importance of being a pioneer in societal transformation. Although it’s not always possible to predict the consequences of decisions, the municipality’s openness and transparency reflect a willingness to share both successes and challenges.

Positive views about the expansion
In a 2021 citizen dialogue conducted on behalf of Skellefteå Municipality, it was revealed that a majority - 81 percent of Skellefteå's residents viewed the growing population as positive for the municipality as a whole. This optimistic attitude also reflects how residents believe the development will affect them personally, with 58 percent anticipating a distinctly positive effect.

A decade of change
Skellefteå, now approaching ten years of intense transformation, has gained valuable insights by fostering collaboration, with humbleness as a guiding principle. These lessons will continue to be crucial as we tackle the new challenges ahead. The city stands as a credible example of how a shared desire to learn from others and innovative leadership can lead to continued success in societal development.
