GUIDE
Sparkling snowmobile adventures
There's not much that beats a beautiful spring winter day on the snow. With 170 miles of snowmobile trails, there is a whole network of roads through Skellefteå municipality that opens up the winter landscape. Here you can make your way through forests, across open spaces and reach places that are otherwise difficult to visit this time of year.
Snowmobiling is not all about speed and adventure. It can just as easily be a quiet trip along well-kept trails that end at a barbecue area, or an excursion to Solbacken or Vikdalsfarmen. The journey becomes part of the experience, with nature and community as company.
Behind the trails there are dedicated snowmobile clubs that do an impressive job. Thanks to their fantastic work with maintenance and signposting of trails, you can get almost anywhere in the municipality on snowmobiles in winter. Most of this is done on a voluntary basis and with a strong desire for everyone to enjoy winter. Becoming a member of a club is an easy way to contribute to the continued existence and development of the trails.
In fact, volunteering is the backbone of snowmobile life here. Without the hours spent grooming trails, packing snow, fixing bridges and more, the network would quickly disappear. What's more, many clubs bring people together in villages and create a sense of community beyond snowmobiling. As well as keeping the trails open, they often organize meetings, excursions and activities that make winter a little warmer for everyone.
So when you drive on a freshly groomed trail or find a well-placed sign pointing the way, it's the result of countless volunteer hours. It's an effort that deserves appreciation - and the easiest way to say thank you is to support the clubs through membership or trail fees.

Things to consider
- Ice driving: Snowmobile trails never cross water, they always end at the shore. All driving on ice is at your own risk - always check the safety of the ice, preferably via the local snowmobile club.
- Company and safety: Ideally, drive with at least two people. Keep a cell phone with you and let someone know where you are going.
- Snowmobile clubs: Check the clubs' Facebook pages for current trail status and ice reports. You can often get quick answers and tips from local skiers.
- Driving license and qualifications: You must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver's license or driving permit according to current regulations. Foreign drivers within the EEA may drive if they are entitled to do so in their home country.
- Where you can drive: Snowmobiles may only be driven on snow-covered ground without damaging vegetation. Drive primarily on marked trails and avoid driving on bare ground, which is not allowed.
- Rules in Västerbotten: Snowmobiles are banned in regulation areas in the mountains, Björnlandet National Park, several nature reserves and in areas with temporary restrictions.
Excursion destinations
Skellefteå municipality is full of cozy stops that become extra special when you get there on a scooter. One person who really knows his stuff is Nils Kågström, who runs the Instagram account @sled.swe. There he gives tips on current snowmobile cafés and activities, and during the winter he also organizes joint trail rides to various destinations - open to anyone with a snowmobile who wants to join in.
Nils' excursion tips for the snowmobile tour:
- Vikdalsfarmen - organizes a scooter café where you can park your scooter right outside the door.
- Siretorp in Sandfors - a family-friendly ski and sledging slope with catering.
- Café Mobacken - organizes a scooter café with good coffee and a warm atmosphere.
- Långvikens Byagårdsförening - organizes a snowmobile café in a charming environment.
Want to find more gems? Keep an eye on social media - the various scooter clubs often share events, activities and tips.
