Making the world's greenest batteries

Skellefteå is a breeding ground for the sustainable industry with low climate impact. In the Bergsbyn industrial area, one of Europe's greenest battery factories is now being built. The factory is being built in stages and is expected to be fully expanded in 2026.

At the Bergsbyn industrial area in Skellefteå, Northvolt Ett is now being built where Northvolt will have most of its production. The factory will be one of Europe's largest battery factories, producing the world's greenest lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and energy storage. The area is as large as 71 football fields and Northvolt's establishment will generate about 4000 jobs in Skellefteå when the factory is fully expanded in 2026.

The groundbreaking took place in 2018 and the construction of the factory is divided into stages, the first of which includes four production buildings that were commissioned at the end of 2021. When the entire Northvolt Ett is in operation, the factory will be able to deliver 60-gigawatt hours per year, which is enough to manufacture about one million electric cars.

During 2021-2022, new roads have been built adjacent to the area to facilitate traffic flows. An extension of Torsgatan from Northvolt to road 372 has been constructed as well as a new roundabout at the entrance to the area from road 372.

To ensure that employees feel safe cycling or walking to work, a new pedestrian and cycle path has been built. It runs parallel to Torsgatan and was completed in early 2023.

Revolt One is on-site, Europe's only large-scale recycling factory, and is key to creating the world's greenest battery. Has the capacity to recycle materials needed for battery production.
