Continued housing guarantee for students at Campus Skellefteå - now with newly built and more attractive living environments
Skellefteå municipality in collaboration with Skebo ensures continued housing guarantee for students at Campus Skellefteå. At the same time, the next step is taken in the development of student housing from temporary modular housing to newly built permanent and city center housing with a higher standard.
In recent years, the municipality has been able to offer temporary student rooms in modules on the campus area through block rental agreements with Skebo. As the temporary building permit for these will expire in the summer of 2026, the phase-out will now begin starting this fall. Therefore, no new leases will be signed in the modules from the fall of 2025, but instead housing will be offered in Skebo's existing housing stock. The students who already live in the modules will be allowed to stay there until final closure in the summer of 2026.
- "We see this as an important step in strengthening Skellefteå as an attractive place to study and which provides better conditions for current and future students as well as the universities that want to establish new programs here," says Ida Lindh, responsible for Campus Skellefteå, the unit for research and education at Skellefteå municipality.
More students are now being offered the opportunity to live in modern, city-center housing with an offer to remain in Skellefteå after completing their studies instead of today's temporary modular housing without security of tenure. In connection with the admission notice being sent out in July, applications for student housing via Skebo will be opened up.
-"Our newly built apartments have a higher standard but at a lower cost to us than the existing modules offered today. The rent level is completely on par with similar new production in our nearest university cities of Umeå and Luleå," says Helena Markgren, CEO of Skebo.
- "In addition to creating a more sustainable living environment for students, we can now offer a unique opportunity in Sweden to stay in these homes after completing their studies, by converting the student contract into a prerequisite for a regular apartment," continues Helena Markgren, at Skebo.
"In this situation that Skellefteå is in right now, we have the opportunity to utilize the permanent housing that exists instead of the temporary student modules that, although the rent has been low, have had challenges and have never been a long-term alternative. Of course, we also hope that many students will enjoy themselves so much that they choose to stay in Skellefteå and in their home even after completing their studies," says Samuel Lundqvist, Chief Financial Officer of Skellefteå Municipality.
-"It's nice to have security and less stress about having to move after completing your studies and making decisions before you actually know what the future holds. Better housing quality in the new homes than in the barracks is appreciated. The fact that those who choose to stay in the modules in their final year can do so is also positive. Says chairman of the student association Eliott Eklöf.
