Young talents are creating value in Skellefteå
This year’s summer scholarship recipients from the Samme Foundation have now been selected and will contribute new knowledge, innovation and tangible development to Skellefteå. A total of 20 students will have the opportunity this summer to work on real projects that strengthen both business and society.
This year’s 20 scholarship recipients will use the grants to develop projects over the summer that are closely linked to their academic studies. Six of the projects are based on the recipients’ own ideas, and seven are being carried out in close collaboration with companies such as Ferex in Byske and Ursviken Technology.
“These aren’t just summer jobs. They’re a way to bring new knowledge, new perspectives, and innovative thinking into both businesses and society,” says the foundation.
Strong expertise – and future recruitment
This year’s scholarship recipients consist largely of engineering students – 14 out of 20, 12 of whom are pursuing a master’s degree in engineering. In addition, there are students with expertise in architecture, cognitive science, and game development. Nine are studying in Umeå, three in Stockholm, but students from Lund, Gothenburg, and Luleå also join those in Skellefteå.
The hope is that many of them will choose to stay or return after graduation. This is a tangible way to show what Skellefteå has to offer, says Jörgen Markgren, Samme Foundation.
Long-term value for the region
Since its inception in 2007, the Sammes Foundation has awarded approximately 13 million kronor. The impact is significantly greater than that; in terms of working hours, the scholarship recipients’ contributions represent development resources worth around 40 million kronor. Over the years, several companies have been started, and many businesses have received support for their development.
As this year’s grants are being awarded, the foundation is now winding down – but the work continues.
The goal is to create a new foundation with a similar purpose, to continue attracting young talent and strengthening development in Skellefteå.
