The Rönnbäret Foundation
The Rönnbäret Foundation is dedicated to promoting the development of research and higher education in Skellefteå. The Foundation achieves this by distributing funds equivalent to the return on its endowment to individuals or organizations that support the Foundation’s mission.

The foundation's board consists of members of the Skellefteå Municipal Council and a representative from Swedbank in Skellefteå.
Application for the Rönnbäret Scholarship
Applications will be accepted starting in March and will close in May; we will provide more specific dates at a later time.
One of the focus areas in Skellefteå’s 2030 strategy concerns Skellefteå as a growth engine for green development.
This involves, among other things, developing Skellefteå into a green growth engine and one of the strongest drivers of sustainable growth in Europe, based on renewable energy, sustainable energy systems, and creative industries. It involves promoting development and knowledge regarding green value chains, new business and collaboration models, and new technical solutions. To achieve this, new forms of knowledge dissemination, joint knowledge development, market-oriented research, and increased appeal for cutting-edge expertise are also required.
We will provide an update on Rönnbäret’s 2026 call for proposals when the time comes.
The application must include
- Justification linked to this year’s theme
- A description of how it contributes to gender equality
- Projects carried out in collaboration with multiple stakeholders are preferred
- A description of how it contributes to fulfilling the Skellefteå 2030 strategy in general
Notification of whether the application has been approved or rejected will be sent in June, followed by a formal award ceremony and announcement.
Applications that have been granted funding must submit a report to the Rönnbäret Foundation within one year, detailing how the funds were used and what results were achieved.
Approved applications will be published on the Skellefteå Municipality and Campus Skellefteå websites, as well as via a press release.
The 2030 Strategy
It is important for Skellefteå to grow. In June 2015, the City Council adopted the Skellefteå 2030 development plan, and the goal has now been expanded to 90,000 residents by 2030. When it comes to business development, a larger population means that the supply of skilled labor to both the private and public sectors can function more effectively. Provided that those moving to a growing Skellefteå possess the skills that are in demand. But just as important as the economy is, of course, that Skellefteå can develop into an even better place as more people live here. This creates opportunities to bring even more ideas to life and become a place where even more people thrive and want to live their lives. Here’s where you can contribute your projects and ideas!

SEK 200,000 for the project “Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care” - Robert Brännström, senior lecturer, Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, was awarded 100,000 SEK for the project “Artistic skills development in the field of computer graphics.”
- Olov Karlsson, Associate Professor, Luleå University of Technology, was awarded 200,000 SEK for “Increased Opportunities for Sustainable Energy Use of Bio-based Materials.”
- Karl Andersson, professor at Luleå University of Technology, was awarded 250,000 SEK for the project “Development of an XAI model that predicts and reduces air pollution.”
- Manuel Alvarez, Assistant Professor, Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, was awarded 200,000 SEK for the project “Sustainable and flexible electricity use for the future.”
- Christer Åhlund, Professor of Distribution Systems at Luleå University of Technology, was awarded 300,000 SEK as a first step for the project “Cybersecurity and Blockchains.” The same amount was awarded for 2022 and 2023.
