Levels of education

Undergraduate level

Stand-alone courses at the undergraduate level include both introductory courses that require prior high school studies and advanced courses that require prior university or college studies.

Studies at the undergraduate level lead to a bachelor’s degree or a vocational degree. Vocational degrees are available at both the undergraduate and advanced levels.

Advanced level

The following applies if you are applying for programs and courses at the advanced level.

• Stand-alone courses at the advanced level require completion of undergraduate-level education.
• Programs at the advanced level comprise 60 higher education credits for a Master of Arts degree or 120 higher education credits for a Master’s degree.
• There are also advanced-level programs for professional degrees.

To begin a program at the advanced level, you must first hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent professional degree. This means that for a Master’s degree, you first complete 180 higher education credits and then an additional 120 higher education credits, i.e., 3 + 2 years of full-time study.

At the advanced level, there are two general degrees: the magister degree and the master’s degree. Vocational degrees are available at both the basic and advanced levels.

Doctoral level

Doctoral-level education lasts four years and leads to a doctoral degree, which is the highest academic degree in Sweden. To be admitted to doctoral-level education, you must meet general and specific admission requirements, and you must be assessed as having the ability to succeed in the program.

Admission Requirements and Selection

To be admitted to a higher education program, you must meet the eligibility requirements, meaning you must have certain prior knowledge. General eligibility is required for all higher education programs, and some programs also require specific eligibility.

There are usually more eligible applicants than there are spots in a program, so a selection process must be conducted.

Basic eligibility at the undergraduate level

You can meet the basic eligibility requirements in various ways, but the most common is a completed high school education. More information on what applies to you specifically, based on your previous studies.

Basic eligibility through individual high school or adult education courses and work experience

You meet the basic eligibility requirement if you have documented work experience of three years at least part-time after the age of 19, and have a grade of at least Pass or E in the following high school courses:

• Swedish/Swedish as a Second Language A + B or Swedish/Swedish as a Second Language 1, 2, and 3
• English A or English 5 and 6
• Mathematics A or Mathematics 1a, b, or c
• Social Studies A or Social Studies 1b, or alternatively Social Studies 1a1+1a2

To verify your work experience, you need to upload an employer’s certificate.

Basic eligibility at the advanced level

• Program: If you hold a bachelor’s degree of at least 180 credits, you meet the basic eligibility requirements for programs at the advanced level.
• Courses: You have basic eligibility for courses at the advanced level if you have completed undergraduate-level education. There is therefore no degree requirement to take courses at the advanced level.

Specific eligibility

Some programs require additional prior knowledge, which is referred to as specific eligibility.

• For programs aimed at beginners, the specific eligibility requirement is specified in high school courses (or equivalent), where a minimum grade of E/Pass/3 is required.
• For programs not intended for beginners, the most common requirement is prior college courses or college credits, or other requirements relevant to the program.

The specific entry requirements vary depending on the program. The specific entry requirements are listed on the course or program page in Stockholm University’s course catalog. It is important that you provide proof that you meet the specific entry requirements when you apply, no later than the final deadline for submitting supplementary documentation.

Eligibility through prior learning

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements through formal qualifications, you can apply to have your eligibility assessed by Stockholm University based on prior learning. The university will then evaluate whether you are deemed to have sufficient knowledge to complete the program you have applied for.

2. Download the application External link. form for prior learning, External link. which you can find on antagning.se. Once you have filled out the form, it must be printed so that you can sign it.
3. Fill out the Assessment Form External link. (169 Kb) as thoroughly as possible
4. Prepare relevant certificates that demonstrate your knowledge and skills. Relevant certificates may come from academic studies, such as grades, course lists, certificates of documented experience from club activities, staff training, or other types of experience. The documents must clearly state the time period and scope.
