Functional variation or reading and writing difficulties
Studying on your own terms is a right. If you have a long-term disability, help is available to support you along the way.
Please contact your educational provider well in advance of the start of the program to ensure you receive the best possible academic support.
Here you will find information about
Nais Student
Nais is a system where students with a permanent disability can apply for educational support for their studies at Swedish universities and colleges. Nais is a national system. However, each institution owns and is responsible for its own personal data in Nais and cannot access another institution’s data.
You can read more about NAIS support and assistance here External link, opens in new window.
Once you have submitted your application in NAIS, you will receive an email from a Funka coordinator asking you to schedule an appointment. Following this meeting, you will receive a decision regarding support, which may include, for example, extended exam time.
Support and assistance you can receive
Support that may be available following consultation between the coordinator and the student:
- Note-taking assistance
You ask a classmate if they would like to be a note-taker. That person will be compensated for taking notes, and you will then be able to make copies of the notes at no cost. Please note that as a student, you must be present at lectures and classes to receive note-taking support.
- Hearing loop - sign language interpreter
Your courses can be scheduled in rooms with a hearing loop, or you can receive a sign language interpreter. Contact the coordinator well in advance of the course start date.
- Exam accommodations
Exam accommodations may include using audiobooks during the exam, taking the exam on a computer with text-to-speech, extended exam time, etc., and these apply to written, centrally administered exams. The extension is 50% of the standard time, up to a maximum of 2 hours. You are responsible for applying for exam accommodations by the final registration deadline (the application form is available below).
- Student Mentor
A student mentor’s role is to provide support, encourage you, and help you structure and plan your studies. The student mentor supports you—you do the work yourself! The student mentor receives compensation for their work.
