Research linked to Umeå University and activities in Skellefteå is investigating how rapid societal transformation affects social sustainability and local cohesion. The focus is on the social dimension of sustainable development—such as human rights, equality, participation, and inclusion.
The research uses qualitative and participatory methods, such as interviews, workshops, and dialogue processes, to capture children’s and young people’s perspectives on safety, belonging, and participation in everyday life. By combining policy analysis with empirical studies, knowledge is generated on how social sustainability can be integrated into urban planning and local development.
The work is grounded in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and national youth policy and provides a knowledge base for municipalities undergoing rapid growth and transformation.
