More tips for distance learners
Classes are conducted in various ways. A teacher can post text, images, presentations, videos, and other materials you need for your course. Through video conferencing, you can participate in group discussions, for example. So even though you’re in different parts of the world, you still get to meet.
Studying remotely can be convenient when you can’t or don’t want to move. But it requires just as much time as studying “the usual way.”
Studying remotely is simple, but it also requires a great deal of self-discipline. You’re responsible for creating your own schedule to keep up with the program and course requirements. A part-time program requires you to study about 20 hours per week. Full-time programs correspond to a standard workweek of 40 hours.
Of course, you must also have access to a computer with an internet connection, which is a basic requirement for accessing the learning platform used in connection with the instruction. Distance learning takes place primarily online. Some courses also require other materials or tools. Sometimes a webcam is needed, or, if you’re studying design, for example, a special program.
Regarding distance learning options, both universities located on the Skellefteå Campus offer a number of courses and programs, and vocational education (YH) is also available as fully or partially distance-based programs. Please contact the respective university or college for more information.
Through Campus Service, you can get information, guidance, and support for your studies. As a student, you have access to the library, group study rooms, computers, video conferencing, Wi-Fi, and copying services. You can also take your exams here. The Campus Library is open to anyone seeking knowledge, and perhaps there are others taking the same course or a similar one who are interested in forming a study group to boost motivation and keep the interest alive.
Studying from home can be a challenge—especially if you miss the social interaction on campus. Here are some practical tips for finding balance and staying focused while studying remotely.
How to succeed with your studies at home:
- Establish routines: Get up, get dressed, and plan your day as if you were on campus. Finish at a set time.
- Designate a study space: Have a fixed place for studying—even if it’s just a corner of the kitchen table.
- Take breaks: Move around every hour and take a proper lunch break.
- Participate actively: Follow lectures and seminars to stay connected and ask questions.
- Focus: Turn off notifications and distractions; feel free to try the Pomodoro Technique(work in focused, short bursts).
- Use digital tools: Zoom, Office 365, and learning platforms make everyday life easier.
- Stay connected: Keep in touch with classmates digitally—have coffee, chat, or study together online.
- Be kind to yourself: Take walks, get some daylight, and take it one day at a time.
If you have mandatory events that require you to be at a nearby university, you can apply for reimbursement for bus fare upon presentation of a receipt. All to make your time as a student easier.
