Fish is good food
Good for your body and your mind! Fish contains vitamin D, healthy fats and essential trace elements.
Some fish should not be eaten very often
Some fish may contain too many environmental pollutants. These are fish species that most people don't eat very often, but which may be common for you if you fish yourself. You can reduce your risk of ingesting harmful substances by eating a variety of fish species, not just a few.
Children and women of childbearing age are more sensitive to dioxins and PCBs, and should not eat fish with high levels more than 2-3 times a year. Elevated levels of the environmental toxins dioxin and PCBs can be found mainly in the fatty fish, i.e. salmon, trout and herring.
Large predatory fish such as pike, zander, large perch and burbot may contain elevated levels of mercury.
There may be a risk of elevated levels of PFAS in fish from all types of water.
The Swedish National Food Agency's dietary advice
Due to the environmental toxin situation, children, young people, those who are breastfeeding, pregnant or want to become pregnant in the future, should not eat salmon, trout, herring, perch, pike, pike-perch and burbot more than 2-3 times a year.
Other people should not eat these fish more than once a week.
