Grayling, Thymallus thymallus

The grayling, queen of the stream, has shiny scales and its large characteristic dorsal fin in beautiful colors. There are local populations in many of the municipality's rivers and lakes, but also along the coast you can find unique small populations that actually both spawn and live in the sea.

Fishing method: Fly fishing can be very fun and effective when you are looking for grayling, but it is of course also possible to catch it with a casting rod. In this case, a casting float and 2-3 small flies or a smaller spinner are recommended. When there is no wind, there is also the chance to lure the grayling into a bite on a dry fly. During the winter, you can try peeping at a depth of about 0.5 meters with mormyska and maggot.

The stock of grayling in the Bothnian Bay is sensitive. Therefore, special rules apply to directed fishing. It is forbidden to fish for grayling in spring and at other times you are only allowed to keep 3 grayling per person per day.

Where and when: The grayling bite is best during summer and fall, but can also be caught during spring-winter ice fishing.

Fishing for grayling in a marine environment is unique. Shallow reefs, headlands and bays with sand and rocky bottoms in the outer coastal band are hot spots. Here they look for small crustaceans and insects to eat.
