Sea trout - Salmo trutta
In Sweden, trout are often named according to where they live - sea trout, brook trout, brown trout and lake trout - but they are basically the same species. In the sea, they are sometimes confused with salmon, but trout have more spots below the lateral line.

Fishing method: In the rivers, fly fishing with a two-handed rod is a popular method. Out on the coast, however, it becomes difficult and a one-handed rod or perhaps best, a slightly longer casting rod is suitable. Put on a long narrow lure, or a casting float with 2-3 flies of varying sizes and fish the area methodically. The sea trout is a pronounced hunter and moves almost constantly in search of food. Everything from small insects and crustaceans to herring are on the menu.
When and where: The most common sea trout fishing is fly and spin fishing for migrating sea trout in the rivers. In the sea, however, you may have a chance of seeing and sometimes catching sea silver as some individuals temporarily feed among rocks and vegetation in shallower areas. Look for bays and headlands in spring where the ice leaves early, and around islands and reefs, preferably further out in the coastal strip.
There are certain regulations and conservation areas that you need to be aware of. These rules are there to protect and conserve fish stocks. Find out about the rules where you plan to fish.
