Trout, Salmo trutta

In Sweden, trout are often named according to where they live - sea trout, brook trout, brown trout and lake trout - but they are basically the same species. In the sea, they are sometimes confused with salmon, but trout have more spots below the lateral line.

Fishing method: Fly fishing with a one-handed rod and a dry fly is something many inveterate anglers dream of, and the "brown trout" is often highly prized. In addition to the dry fly, streamers, spinners and smaller spoons are recommended. If you know where the "secret trout" and the slightly larger fish are, ice fishing with smaller baitfish may be worth a try, including trolling if permitted.

When and where: Stationary, often small, populations are found in some of our local rivers, but there are also lakes with both wild and planted populations.

The days around midsummer are almost religious for fly fishermen. Suddenly, the shy, larger individuals can choose to temporarily change their diet and start eating mayflies directly from the surface. In addition to the short period around midsummer, late summer and a bit into the fall are also exciting, then with a caddisfly or pupa in the end of the rod.

There are almost always rules around trout fishing and they are there to protect and conserve stocks. Read up on the rules where you intend to fish and buy a fishing license before you start fishing.
