Breaking the legacy of violence - for parents-to-be or parents of children up to five years old
Have you experienced violence in your family growing up and are worried about how it will affect you as a parent? The Center Against Violence (CMV) can help you in your parenting role through the group activity Break the Violence Legacy. Break the Inheritance of Violence is for people over the age of 23 who either already have children up to the age of five, are expecting a child or are considering having a child. You can either come alone or with your partner. It is free to attend.
Aims of the group
Prevent parental violence from being passed on to the next generation.
- Understand and gain knowledge about how upbringing/experiences affect you as a parent.
- Opportunities to understand their experiences of violence in a different light.
- Increase their sense of worth by sharing thoughts, fears and experiences in a group of people with similar experiences.
- Gain knowledge about what children need, and through that become more confident as a parent.
Content
Research shows that we bring patterns and ways of acting from our own parents and that it can have an impact on how we act towards our children. If you have been a victim of violence as a child, it can be important to take your concerns seriously.
With us, you can work with five to ten others who are in the same situation as you. We will work together by sharing knowledge, simple exercises/activities, conversations/exchange of experiences, thoughts and good solutions. We will talk about:
- What is anger? What is violence?
- What does it do to children to grow up with violence in the family?
- What do children need to be safe?
- From guilt and shame (not daring to talk about) to openness and responsibility.
- How to deal with your own anger in a safe way?
- What do we do if...? There is a lot of security in knowing what to do when things get difficult.
- Where can you turn when you want help as a parent?
The group is led by CMV staff with extensive experience of working with domestic violence.
Information about group meetings will be communicated on an ongoing basis.
