Do you have a sewer blockage?

Here is information for those who are connected to a municipal sewer. If you have private sewage (your own sewage system), we refer you to private operators. In the event of a sewer blockage in a condominium or rental property, contact the property owner.

Check where the blockage is

Start by checking whether there is a blockage in all drains or not. If there is not a blockage in all drains, the blockage is on your own pipe. If all the drains in the property are blocked, the blockage may be on the private service pipe. This is the pipe that connects the property's sewer system with the municipal sewer system in the street.

The service pipe consists of two parts, one private and one municipal.

  • The private service pipe extends from the property to a connection point. The connection point is usually located about 0.5 meters outside the property boundary. If there is a blockage in the private service pipe (see figure 1 below), contact a private flushing company.
  • The municipal service pipe extends between the connection point and the municipal network. If the blockage is on the municipal service pipe or further out on the public pipe network (see image 2 below), contact the municipality's customer service so we can send a flushing truck. Contact information can be found at the bottom of the page.

There may be a clean-out manhole at the connection point, about 0.5 meters outside the property boundary, at the same level as a water service valve. If you find a small round manhole cover (not a large manhole cover sitting in the street), carefully try to open it. If the well is empty, there is probably a blockage in the property's pipes (Figure 1). If there is water in the well, the blockage is probably on the municipal service line (image 2), or further out on the municipal pipe network. Please report this immediately, see contact details below. Please mention that you have looked in the well and that there is water there. If you do not find a well, please contact us via customer service.

Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse your expenses if you first hired a private flushing company and it then turns out that the blockage is in the municipal pipe network.

Prevent problems in the sewer

To avoid blockages in sewer pipes and pumps, make sure to only flush pee, poop, vomit and other bodily fluids as well as toilet paper down the toilet.

Other things, such as washcloths, wet wipes, paper towels, sanitary towels, cotton swabs and pads and similar items should be disposed of in the normal waste, known as residual waste.
