What is a fisheries management area?

FVO/FVOF is an association of landowners with fishing rights in a specific area. Their task as an association is to manage and provide fishing to the public in a sustainable way, this is done by selling fishing licenses and having rules about fishing. All areas can and should have their own rules to manage the unique stocks in the best way.

What is a fishing license?

A fishing license is a temporary permit for a limited time and a specific area, usually a daily, weekly or annual pass. Each fisherman must therefore be able to present a current fishing license together with valid identification. The fishing license is purchased before starting to fish from the local fisheries management area or association, according to their instructions.

Fishing without permission means fishing in waters where someone else has private fishing rights without having obtained permission (e.g. purchased a fishing license). Fishing without permission is a criminal act against the owner of the fishing right. It is a violation of the Fisheries Act and can lead to prosecution or fines.

Fishing rules for lakes and rivers

The rules are in place to protect stocks but also to ensure that they can be fished. We all need to follow the rules so that future generations can also catch a fish and enjoy a living and functioning ecosystem.

For current rules and questions about fishing in a specific water, select the desired fisheries management area via the map service Naturkartan.se.

For waters that are not part of a fisheries management area, the permission of the fishing rights owner is required before fishing, and you must follow the rules of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management where these apply.

In the Skellefte River from the mouth in the sea to the dam in Mobacken, the Marine and Water Authority's regulations apply.

Salmon: Permitted to fish all year round. Minimum size 50 cm.
Trout: Restricted from September 1 - October 14. Minimum size 50 cm. Maximum one trout with adipose fin per fisherman and day. No limit per day for farmed trout (without adipose fin).
Grayling: Restricted from April 15 - May 31. Minimum size 35 cm.

In addition to these rules, fishing rights owners and fisheries management areas can set further restrictions. There is one fisheries management area on this stretch, which is Lejonström's fisheries management area External link, opens in new window..

Please note: fishing is prohibited on the south side of the river downstream of Bergsbydammen.
