Ice (jig) fishing

Ice fishing is a great way to fish on the ice and actually works in summer from a boat. Ice fishing rods are available in several different sizes and designs to match the species, method and bait.

Common baits: Vertical perch, shiner, balance perch and mormyska and you can then bait the bait with for example maggot, shrimp or worm

Common species: Perch, Whitefish & Roach. Also works well for char and rainbow trout

Equipment: jigging rod, bait, lure, ice drill, ice bucket, pallet, seaweed or seaweed

Other tips: Try different movements and depths, some fish move just under the ice while others thrive better at the bottom. If you don't get a bite within a few minutes, move and try a new hole. Maybe you should try a little shallower or find the deep hole? A common tactic is to start inshore and then move out to find the fish for the day.

Peeping is an exciting method where you fish in shallow water, and lie and look down into the borehole. This allows you to see the bottom, the bait and when the fish bite. If you drop some crushed eggshell into the hole and put a jacket or blanket over your head, you can see the bottom even better. If it's windy, turn your feet into the wind so it feels less cold.
