Field Work Unit

Field Work Unit is part of the Social Services Department’s prevention unit and is aimed at young people aged 13–25. Outreach workers – or “field workers,” as we’re also known – work with young people in both preventive and outreach capacities. We collaborate with parents and various stakeholders to ensure a safe adolescence for the municipality’s young people.

We are a team of seven field workers based at Hörnellgatan 4, and our work covers the entire municipality of Skellefteå. We are bound by confidentiality and do not keep records; however, if we have concerns, we are required to report them. 

For you as a parent

You, as parents, are important to us, and we may contact you if we become concerned about your child. We do this to identify issues early, engage you, and involve you so that together we can work in the best interests of the young person.

You can also reach out to us to discuss:

• You’re worried about your teenager
• Your teenager is out and about in risky environments
• You have questions about alcohol, drugs, and crime
• You have other concerns and don’t know where to turn

Preventive Work

Preventive work is based on collaboration with others who work with young people in their professions, including staff at schools, youth centers, and organizations. The outreach program is tasked with providing information about trends and tendencies among young people. This may involve what is happening on social media, drugs, or current high-risk environments. We do this, for example, at parent meetings and via social media.

The outreach program offers support groups for youth with substance abuse and/or mental health issues in the family, the ABC-Teen Parent Group, family group conferences, and mediation in cases of crime. Outreach work

Outreach work involves being out among young people as much as possible, both during the day and in the evening. This can take place at schools and recreation centers, but also in places such as downtown areas, parking lots, or high-risk environments.

By high-risk environments, we mean places with little adult supervision where young people gather, where there may be an increased risk of being victimized in various ways, recruitment into criminal activity, or where alcohol and drugs may be present.

Through our outreach work, we maintain contact with both young people and parents to offer support and, when necessary, refer them to other support services.
